Finis Gleason Wood

Finis Gleason Wood, age 99, of rural Nevada, died November 12, 2011 at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born at Sloan, Iowa on October 30, 1912, to Thomas Wood and Mary Isabell (Rinker) Wood.

On June 22, 1941, he was married to LaMerna Attebery in Kansas City, MO. who preceded him in death in March, 2006.

Finis lived most of his life in and near Nevada.

He worked as an auto mechanic in Nevada and for the MFA Oil Company in Columbia, MO. before serving in the US Marine Corps during World War II. After his military service, Finis was an auto mechanic in Nevada and a letter carrier for the US Postal Service for 18 years retiring in 1976.

He was a member and former deacon of the Church of Christ, member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and formerly the Missouri Nut Growers Association, and in the early 1940's, the Nevada Merchants baseball team.

His hobbies included woodworking, gardening, fishing, and grafting and growing pecan trees. He loved the outdoors and was a dedicated conservationist.

Survivors include one son, Byron Wood and his wife, LaDonna of Pleasant Hill, MO; one daughter Phyllis Clayton and her husband, Gene of Springfield, MO; four grandchildren: Sherry Mason and her husband Doug of Battlefield, MO, Randy Clayton and his wife, Laura of Nixa, MO, Darren Wood, Pleasant Hill, MO, Brandon Wood, Nashville, TN, and four great-grandchildren: Matthew, Emily and Lauren Clayton and Ashlynn Mason.

He was preceded in death by his wife LaMerna, two brothers, LeRoy and Salem Wood, and one sister, Weltha Wood.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 16, 2011, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Ministers Darrell Tucker and John Lee officiating.

Internment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada.

Friends may call now and until the hour of service at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada, and the family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, November 16, 2011, between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service.

LaMerna Avanell (Attebery) Wood, age 88, of rural Nevada, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada following a lengthy illness.

She was born near Akron, CO, on April 22, 1917, to Robert Attebery and Elsie May VanMeter Attebery.

On June 22, 1941, she was married to Finis Wood in Kansas City, MO, and he survives.

LaMerna graduated from Rockville, MO, High School in 1935 and was employed as a waitress at Wood's Café in Nevada. She lived most of her adult life in and near Nevada.

LaMerna was a cook and cafeteria manager for the Nevada R-5 Schools for 12 years and later worked in the Dietary Department at the Nevada State School and Hospital for 15 years retiring in 1979.

She was a member of the Church of Christ, Nevada Garden Club, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, gardening and making hooked rugs.

Survivors in addition to her husband Finis include one son, Byron Wood and his wife, LaDonna of Pleasant Hill, MO; one daughter, Phyllis Clayton and her husband, Gene of Springfield, MO; four grandchildren, Sherry Mason and her husband Doug, Randy Clayton and his wife, Laura of Springfield, MO, Darren Wood, Little Rock, AR, Brandon Wood, Nashville, TN, and three great-grandchildren, Matthew, Emily and Lauren Clayton, Springfield, MO.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Amel, Vaughn, and Vincil Attebery, and one sister, Alene Tally.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 27, 2006, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with Ministers Bill Visalli and John Lee officiating.

Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada.

Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends 4-5:00 p.m. on Sunday evening.
