Francis Bernard McClain known as Frank B. McClain, Pennsylvania Politician, was born April 14, 1864 in Lancaster PA, during the American Civil War. He was the son of Francis McClain of Londonderry, Ireland and Susan (Mulhatton) of Lancaster PA.

He attended parochial schools in Lancaster and graduated from Lancaster High School Class of 1881. (Frank B. Mclain received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Villanova University 1919.) After an apprenticeship as a bookkeeper and salesman in the cattle business, he became a cattle seller (drover).

He married Ellen Bernardine (O'Neill) on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1888. They had 1 child who died in infancy.

1889 Frank B. McClain became a limited partner in the firm of George R. Sensenig and Andre F. Frantz, for the sale of live-stock. 1900 became independent, under name of McClain Commisson Company. 1918 became incorporated as McClain & Co., 538 Woolworth Bld, Lancaster, Pa.

1909 he was one of the main organisers of the Lancaster Live-Stock Exchange and he was elected the first president. He wrote a weekly newspaper column about the Lancaster Live-Stock Exchange.

Frank B. McClain was known as being intelligent, diplomatic, compassionate, charismatic and friendly. An excellent orator with a powerful tenor voice that he would use both on public and private occassions, and in the choir of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church Lancaster, PA, along with his wife Bernadine McClain,(aka E.B.O'Neill, Ellen Bernardine McClain), who was herself an accomplished pianist and singer.

1894 elected as Republican to the State Legislature, House of Representatives, for the State of Pennsylvania. Re-elected 1896, 1898, 1900, 1902, 1904, 1906, 1908. 1899-1907 Vice-President of the Committee on Appropriations, he was also a member of other House of Representative committees and special committees including, Ways and Means and Corproations and Railroads. Elected Speaker of the House of Representatives for the State of Pennsylvania 1907. 1910 elected Republican Mayor of Lancaster, PA. 1911 re-elected for 4 year term as Mayor. Resigned Jan. 6, 1915 to qualify for office of Lt. Governor for the State of Pennsylvania which he was elected to in November 1914.

He was a member of several charitable and philanthropic organisations. Some of these were: Trustee of Home for Friendless Children, Director of Lancaster Charity Society, Member of Lancaster Historical Society, Member of the Union League of Philadelphia, Member of the Young Republican Club, Vice-President of the Thaddeus Stevens Industrial School of Lancaster, Member of the Moose Lodge, Director of the A.Herr Smith Library of Lancaster, member of the Manufactures Club of Philadelphia, member of the Elks, Member of the American Club Pittsburgh, PA. Member of the Saddle and Sirloin Club of Chicago, President for over 20 years of the Philadelphia dining organisation, The Terrapin Club, which entertained the most prominent men of the USA at the time.

For years Frank B. McClain played Santa Claus at the local Children's Home. In speaking of the work he said "To my mind, one of the highest forms of applied Christianity in which we can engage, is to put joy into the lives and hope into the hearts of orphans or neglected children."

Frank B. McClain died in Lancaster Pa, after a long illness, on October 11, 1925 aged 61 years of age. His burial mass was at St. Anthony of Padua. and he was buried in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery Lancaster, Pa. His wife, E. Bernardine McClain (1869-1931), is also buried in St. Mary's. Frank B. McClain was known as 'The Red Rose of Lancaster' for the red rose he always wore in his lapel.
