Martha Steele Brown, 87, a resident of Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg, formerly of Abingdon, died at 4:58 a.m. Friday on Aug. 17, 2001 at Rosewood Care Center. She was born Oct. 10, 1913 in San Jose, Calif., the daughter of Arthur Lacy and Mary Louise Rowles Steele. She married Keith E. Brown on Dec. 23,1936 at RR Gilson. He preceded her in death on April 17, 1997. Surviving are two sons, Byron K. (Carol) Brown, Whitehall, Ill. and Barry L. (Marty) Brown RR Galesburg; two daughters, Barbara E. (Joseph) Dryden, Galesburg and Betty Jo (Lee) Marks, R.R. Galesburg; 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother. She had been a resident of the Care Center since April of 1999. She had lived in Galesburg since September of 1993 and prior to that had lived in Abingdon and rural Galesburg. She attended Western Illinois Teacher's College in Macomb. She taught at Delong, for three years and later at Hedding Grade School in Abingdon for seventeen years retiring in 1980. She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Abingdon and the Woman's Fellowship group. She was a member of Chapter BB of P.E.O. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon with Rev. M. Annette Faull and Mrs. Eleanor Landon officiating. Burial was in the Abingdon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Congregational United Church of Christ or Hedding Grade School.
