US Congressman. As a teenager, he joined the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and served as a courier for General Robert Frederick Hoke. In April 1865, he surrendered with General Joseph E. Johnston’s army at Durham, North Carolina. He was elected to represent North Carolina in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1891 until 1895.
