U.S. Congressman. While as a plantation owner, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Entering politics, he was appointed U.S. Attorney for the district of North Carolina in 1817 and served in the North Carolina State Senate (1815-1819, 1822, 1826, 1830). In 1831, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-second Congress and to the next eight Congresses, serving until 1849. After leaving Congress, he returned to his plantation duties until his death.
