Francis J. Vanderwall Sr. 1928 -2011 PHELPS/MANCHESTER - Francis J. Vanderwall Sr., 83, died on November 9, 2011, at the House of John in Clifton Springs, surrounded by his loving family. Francis was born on March 17, 1928 in Clifton Springs and was the son of Albert and Eliza Vanderwall. He was a graduate of Manchester High School and a U.S. Navy veteran who served during World War II. He retired from Lehigh Valley Railroad and Conrail after more than 30 years of service. Francis was a gentleman farmer and loved to fly his Aeronca Champ and J3 Piper Cub. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Vanderwall; children, Francis (Claudia) Vanderwall Jr., Pamela (John) Kunes, Valerie (Scot Sr.) Haynes, Stephen (Katherine) Vanderwall, Richard (Debbie) Vanderwall, Wayne Vanderwall, Albert (Yun) Vanderwall, Johanna (Tom) Brownell, Christopher Vanderwall, Jonathan (Rose) Vanderwall, and Betty Jane (Timothy) Kindelberger; 27 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Kerry Spencer; and grandson, Justin Craig. Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, at Halsted-Patrick Funeral Home, 19 N. Main St., Manchester. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 14 at the funeral home. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Riverview Cemetery.
