John Washington Carson, better known as J.W., was a contractor and carpenter in Dawson, Minnesota, for about 20 years. From about 1905 to 1925 he worked on many large local projects, including grain elevator construction. In 1907, he was paid 18 cents a foot to lay the first concrete sidewalks. In 1913, he partnered with other contractors to build the dam on the Lac qui Parle River.
