Fred joined the army as a private. He married Janie when she was fifteen years old. They lost their first child, a stillborn baby girl, but went on to have three sons and one daughter.

Fred went to Officer Candidate School. He and his family traveled outside of the United States to Germany and Japan. He retired as a Lt. Colonel.

He went to Mount Airy, NC to manage the Jewel Box jewelry store. Later he bought his own store in Waynesville, NC. It was where he died of cancer of the lungs and was buried there.
