North Carolina Governor, US Senator. He served in both the house of commons and senate of North Carolina. He was a member of the Continental Congress from 1780 to 1781. He was elected as the first President of the Congress, after the Articles of Confederation was signed, creating the United States, but he declined the nomination. He served as the Governor of North Carolina from 1787 to 1889 until he was elected as a U.S. Senator (1789 to 1793).
