Jacob's father was George Varner b. VA (George was the son of John Henry Varner/Johanna Heinrich Werner). His
mother was Sarah Ester Roberts b. NC. Jacob's relationship to his father is established by sworend testimoner by a Dr. Shamblin of Cherokee Co., AL in a document found in the National Archives in Ft. Worth, TX.
On 7 Dec. 1845 in Knoxville, TN, Jacob Ira Varner married Catherine Keller Brakebill Wooddy, widow of Isaac Wooddy. (The marriage records of Knox Co. have an additional listing of 16 Oct. 1845 with George Varner as the bondsman).
Catherine and Jacob spent most of their productive life in the area of McMinn and Monroe counties Tennessee. In McMinn Co. the Varner girls marry and start their new families.
Jacob served in the Civil War as a substitute soldier for a younger man. This was done in exchange for the deed to the three boys to a farm. Several years after Jacob returned from the war the family settled in Cherokee Co., AL and it is here that the three boys marry and begin their families.
