OBIT: Brillion News – February 26, 1915: "GOTTFRIED FISCHER At the home of his son, Henry, John Christian Gottfried Fischer, age 80 years 9 months and 11 days passed away to his Final Home, Sunday morning in the presence of his son's wife and her children whom he had called to his bedside a few moments before the end came and pointing upwards quietly breathed his last. The deceased came to this county May 10, 1834 from Weiderhagen Germany with his parents who settled on a farm in Rockland. By diligence and perseverance they built up a home here. When 22 years of age Mr. Fischer married Miss Johanna Krueger, their marriage being blessed by 9 children 2 of them dying in infancy and the oldest son, Henry, with whom the father resided, passed away about 2 months ago, having succumbed to a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Fischer became a soldier of the Civil War and fought nobly for his country's cause. The funeral took place Tuesday from the house and from Ev. Zion Church, Rockland of which congregation he was an active member, Rev. J. J. Schneller officiated, the Rockland choir singing appropriate songs. His body is interred in Rockland cemetery beside his wife and three children who have been waiting for him on the Other Shore. One brother, David Fischer of Brillion, his sons, Wm. Fischer of Quarry, Herman and Martin of Rockland, and daughters, Elizabeth Seehawer, Rockland, Paulina and Matilda Wegner of Peshtigo and 11 grandchildren are among the mourner left."
