Indian Campaigns Medal of Honor Recipient. Enlisted in the Army at New York on November 3, 1865 and served as a First Sergeant, Troop H, 1st U.S. Cavalry. At the Battle White Bird Canyon, Idaho, June 17, 1877, he was detailed with 6 men to hold a commanding position against hostile Indians. He held it with gallantry until the forward troops fell back. He then fought his way through the Indians, rejoined a portion of his command, and continued the fight in retreat. He had 2 horses shot from under him, was captured, but escaped and reported back for duty after 3 days' hiding and wandering in the mountains. He completed his military service in the Regular Army on May 14, 1879 and was discharged at Walla Walla, Washington where he settled. He joined the Army of the Washington Territorial Militia on May 18, 1881 which was reorganized into the Washington National Guard in 1888. On December 22, 1897 he was appointed Colonel and Quartermaster General of the Washington National Guard and served until he retired on October 16, 1905.
