US Congressman. He attended the University of North Carolina and Yale University, and during World War I, served as an Ensign in the United States Navy. Following the war, he worked in the textile mills as chairman of the board for the Chatham Manufacturing Company, was Commissioner of Forsyth County North Carolina, served as a member of the State Board of Conservation and Development, member of the Woolen Wage and Hour Board, Washington, D.C., in 1939, plus owned and operated a farm near Elkin, North Carolina. During World War II, he again served in the United States Navy as a Captain and was highly decorated for his combat duty in the Southwest Pacific. In 1949, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1957. He died shortly after leaving office at age 60.
