Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He is buried under the name of John William Menter. He served in the Union Army as a Sergeant in Company D, 5th Michigan Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on April 6, 1865 at Deatonsville (Sailor's Creek), Virginia. His citation reads "Capture of flag."
