William Alfred Petty was born to Isaac Daniel Petty and Ophelia Delilah Allen Petty on February 15, 1894. Sometime in 1921 William Alfred Petty married Ruth Green from Oglesby, Coryell County, Texas daughter of Grundy Green and Lula Jane Adcock Green. Following their marriage My Grandfather and Grandmother taken birth and census records moved several times before settling in San Angelo, Texas. In 1922 they were living in Gustine, Comanche County, Texas where their first child, Alpha Mae Petty was born on April 05th. By 1923 they had relocated to Bangs, Brown County,Texas and had their second child Myrtle Marie Petty born on May 19th. Later census and birth records show that they had moved into Tom Green County, Texas and by 1928 had their third child, Anna Louise Petty born February 28th just shortly before being a leap year baby. Records also show this move was only for a short while because in 1930 the records show them to be living in Llano, Llano County, Texas where my Mother Dorothy Nell Petty their fourth child was born on August 23rd. The Petty's returned to Tom Green County, Texas where they were residing by 1935. It was sometime between 1923 and 1928 they lost a set of twins so small that my Grandfather had to bury them in a shoe Box. However due to their loss they were blessed in 1941 with another set of twin girls, Ada Bell Petty and Maida Beth Petty being their valentine babies born on February 14th in Tom Green county. A few years later their final offspring and seventh of a family of girls was born. Glenda Fay Petty born February 17th, 1946 ended what I would consider my Grandfathers interest in having a son. There is a story which was told by my mother, when asked what they had named their last Daughter, my Grandfather would say, Omega Fay. Whether the story has truth or not it still rings with humor and would not surprise me if that would have been his answer. Living was tough but through it all they survived and made ends meet. Eventually the traveling from farm to farm picking cotton stopped and William Alfred worked for the WPA program for the highway department. Afterward he was employed by the Tom Green County Court House of San Angelo, Texas and worked there until his death on the 5th of June 1959 in their employee break room. William Alfred Petty's life ended due to a massive Heart Attack and he went on to be with his maker and Lord. There are many stories I grew up hearing about my Grandfather and I have yet to ever hear a bad one. He was good to his family and many hearts were broken that day and still are with the surviving family members including grandchildren who were old enough to remember his love for family. No one knows of an enemy he ever had that I personally know of. So in honor of a well respected and loved man I share with you just a piece of his history. I have been blessed to be a part of such a great family.
