Asturian Royalty. Born the daughter of Queen Gaudiosa and Pelayo, the first king of the Asturians. Upon her brother Favila's death, Ermesinda's husband Alfonso of Cantabria became Alfonso I, also known as Alfonso the Catholic. The couple had at least three surviving children, the eldest, upon the death of Alfonso I, became Fruela I of Asturias, who would then assassinate his brother, Vimarano. A daughter, Adosinda, also became queen upon the ascension of her husband Silo as the sixth king of Asturias. After Ermesinda's death, her body was entombed at Santa Cueva de Covadonga with her husband's under the epitaph: Here lies the Catholic and Holy King, Don Alonso the First, and his wife Dona Ermenisinda, sister of Don Favila, whom he succeeded. This king won many victories over the Moors. He died in Cangas in the year 757. Her name has also been recorded as Ormisenda, Ermisenda, Ermesinde, Ermessenda, and Ermenisinda.
