Perlee Lester Mathews was the son of David Crockett and Emily Shaw Booth Mathews. He was a graduate of Howe's Academy in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and taught in several one room schools in Henry, Des Moines and Lee County in Iowa. He married Anna Belle Ramsey, daughter of George Washington and Irene Linn Ramsey, March 17, 1898 in New London, Henry County, Iowa. This union was blessed with three children, June Geneva, Roy Earnest and Virgil Linn.

After Brief Illness Death Relieves Suffering.

Funeral at Presbyterian Church Saturday

Mr. Perlee Mathews was born in Danville, Iowa, Oct. 16, 1868 and died at his home east of New London Thursday, Oct. 14, 1909. He lacked two days of being 41 years of age. He was married to Miss Belle Ramsay, Mar. 17, 1898. Three children were born to them and they with the widow, two brothers of Mr. Mathews: Ray and Wallace; together with David Mathews, his father survive of the immediate family.Mr. Mathews prepared himself for a teacher by a high school education and attendance at Howe's Academy and taught for 12 years in Henry, Des Moines and Lee counties, but in the spring of 1898 he settled on the farm east of town, where he has since resided.He united with the Congregational church at Danville when 12 years of age, and later transferred his membership to the Presbyterian church here. He was Superintendent of the Sabbath school and was an able, willing, and most interested worker. The funeral service which consisted of a prayer at the home, sermon at the church, and song and ritual at the grave were conducted by Rev. E. B. Whitney.On every side were heard expressions of the profoundest sorrow, and a deep feeling of loss.
