U.S. Congressman. Moving to North Carolina, in 1862, he graduated from the literary and law departments of the University of South Carolina, was admitted to the bar in 1870 and commenced to practice law in Hendersonville. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1876, Mayor of Hendersonville in 1877 and a member of the North Carolina State House of Representatives, (1887-89). In 1889, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-first Congress, serving until 1891. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was judge of the criminal court in 1895, a member of the North Carolina State House of Representatives, (1895-97), judge of the circuit court in 1897, judge of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina, (1898-99) and a member of the North Carolina State House of Representatives, (1911-13). Relocating to Illinois, in 1916, he practiced law until his death at age 68.
