A native of Canada, Hyatt came to California via the Isthmus of Panama in 1858. By 1862, he made his way to Stockton and settled. He co-founded the Stockton Iron Works. Hyatt was elected Mayor of Stockton in both 1879 and 1880. He was also a director of the Farmers and Merchants Bank, and Vice- President of the Stockton Insurance and Real Estate Association.
