Explorer. Considered one of the greatest explorers of the 20th Century; an heir to Livingston, Stanley, Speke, Burton and Lawrence of Arabia. He was born in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, and took an early interest in the life of the natives. He traveled through remote and hostile lands and came to places never before visited by a westerner. For years he lived like the natives; for instance the Arabian Bedu and Marsh Arabs of southern Iraq. His expeditions through the Empty Quarter of Saudi-Arabia and Yemen in the 1940´s, is described in ”Arabian Sands”, ranked as one of the best travel books of all time. He was Knighted in 1995.
