US Congressman. Born at Richland Creek, North Carolina, he graduated from the University of North Carolina, in 1856 and was a teacher (1857-58). He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1859 and commenced to practice law in Charlotte, North Carolina. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain in Company H, 26th North Carolina Infantry, Confederate Army. After war, he was an attorney, Mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, (1869-71), president of the Merchants & Farmers’ National Bank, (1871-74) and president of the Commercial National Bank of Charlotte, (1874-80). In 1881, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-seventh and Forty-eighth Congresses, serving until 1885. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was North Carolina State bank examiner, (1885-86), collector of internal revenue for the District of North Carolina, (1886-87) and engaged in the practice of law until his death at age 65.
