Dutch Olympic Swimmer. Mastenbroek was the first woman to win four Olympic medals at the 1936 games in Berlin, Germany. She was 17 years old at the time, and her medals included, 3 gold, and 1 silver. Mastenbroek was later named 'The Empress of Berlin' by the German Olympic Committee. In 1934 she also won three gold and 1 silver at the European Championship. After her Olympic career she became a swimming instrutor in 1937. In 1997 she was awarded the Olympic Order, the International Olympic Committee's highest honor. In her swimming career she set 7 world records in the Olympic 100 meter freestyle, 400 meter freestyle, 4 x 100 meter freestyle, and the 100 meter backstroke, among other events.
