US Congressman. Born in Saybrook, Connecticut, he graduated from Yale College in 1787, then was employed as a private tutor in Georgia, in 1788, relocated South Carolina, in 1789, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1791 and commenced to practice law in Union, South Carolina. He was a member of South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1796-97) and elected as a Federalist to the Sixth Congress, serving (1799-1801). After his term, he resumed the practice of law and was elected a member of the board of trustees of South Carolina University. In 1810, he was elected judge of the circuit court in 1810 and served until his death at age 62 in Fairfield, South Carolina.
