Samuel had a common school education.
He formed a partnership with his nephew, William L. Emery for the tin and stove making business. He sold this business and associated with his older brother William Emery in the general mercantile business at Springvale and later partnered with Mr. Samuel Lord in the same business until 1846. Samuel B. Emery then erected a store at a corner location in Sanford, Maine and traded there with partners until 1869.
Samuel was Deputy Sheriff for several years and Sheriff by appointment in 1856. He served the Town of Sanford, Maine as a selectman for 5 years, was treasurer for 3 years, and had a good reputation in these duties.
He served during the Civil War in public office and made the motion to pay volunteers who enlisted into the United States Army from the Town Treasury. The approval of this motion encouraged significant volunteers for the US Civil War Army. He was an ardent Democrat and was a candidate for County offices.
He was generous and helped many poor people in the community.
