US Congressman. During the Civil War, he enlisted as a Private in Company A, 82nd United States Colored Infantry. Rising to 1st Sergeant, he was severely wounded in the April 2 to April 9, 1865 Union Army assault and capture of Fort Blakely, Alabama, which caused the amputation of part of his right leg. He was mustered out on May 30, 1865. He was a businessman and United States Customs Inspector in New Orleans, Louisiana when he was tabbed by local Republicans for Congress, and was elected to represent Louisiana's 6th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1875 to 1877. He was the only African-American to be elected to Congress from Louisiana during the Reconstruction Era.
