In addition to her career, Doris devoted her life to volunteering at her home church, Community Lutheran of McAllister. She used her considerable musical talents to serve the church as organist, choir leader, and accompanist for most of her adult life. It was her role of teaching junior high students for over 50 years, however, that may have had the greatest impact on others, touching the lives of a multitude of young people, many of whom continued to visit her over the years.
Doris married Cecil Mays on Aug. 4, 1945, and they enjoyed 57 years of marriage together. Cecil preceded her in death on April 18, 2003. Doris and Cecil spent many winters in Florida during retirement and enjoyed numerous camping trips with family over the years, making friends wherever they traveled.
Doris was beloved by all who knew her - from the extraordinary people in the McAllister community to her former customers at the First National Bank of Marinette. Her life touched the hearts of young and old alike, and she will be deeply missed.
In addition to her husband, Cecil, Doris was preceded in death by her brother, Stanley Olson, Green Bay; infant twin brothers, Gordon and Glen Olson; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Doris is survived by twin daughters, Joan (Denver) Johnson, Suamico; Jane (Mike) Tyler, Green Bay; and one son, Lyle, West Hills, Calif.; five grandchildren, Aubrey Johnson, Gentry Johnson, Sara (Dan) Pullen, Kristine (Joe) Vine, and Emily (Dan) Tadisch; six great-grandchildren, Mason Rogers, Brady Pullen, Madison Vine, Olivia Vine, Jack Vine, and Chloe Tadisch; sisters-in-law, Ellen Olson, Green Bay; Carol Mays, Marinette; and Jean Mays, Fort Smith, Ark.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her family was the greatest source of joy in her life. We had the blessing of celebrating her 90th birthday with a gathering of 90 friends and family at her church only weeks before her passing. It was a highlight for her and an appropriate grand finale to a life well lived.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Unity Hospice for their loving care during Mom's health challenges over the last several months and to the exceptional friends and neighbors in McAllister whose regular visits brightened Mom's life every day.
