Del Norte Prospector dated April 27, 1951
Funeral services were conducted from the Masonic Temple Tuesday afternoon for R. J. Robinson, a Del Norter for the past 35 years, and one of the pioneers in the development of the area’s head lettuce industry.
Mr. Robinson died Saturday evening. He had returned just a few hours before from La Junta, where he had spent the winter with his daughter.
Robert James Robinson was born to Robert and Anna Robinson at Rouses Point, New York, November 11, 1864. He spent his childhood in and around this eastern community.
On November 11, 1889, he was united in marriage to Miss Rosina Gremel. To this union were born two sons and two daughters. The family traveled west, settling at Vona, Colorado where he homesteaded a section of land.
After leaving the homestead, the family came to Del Norte where he was employed by Henry Dyer on the old Aydelotte ranch. He then went into partnership with the late Louie Eichenrodt and the late C.W. Donnen and raised the first head lettuce in the Del Norte section on the present L.S. Officer ranch. Until his death, he was active in farming except for four years spent at Long Island, N.Y.
Growing and exhibiting farm products were among his hobbies and industries of the past few years. He was a great believer and supporter of Del Norte’s valley seed show, exhibiting here and at the state fair, and winning. He was an authority on the native grass crops of the district.
He was a member of Del Norte Lodge No. 105 A.F.& A.M., having been raised to the sublime degree of a Master mason January 20, 1927.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, two sons, Howard, of Denver, Claude of Durango; two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Baker, of Prescott, Arizona, and Mrs. Frances Klob, of La Junta, nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and many friends.
Rev. Francis Derick officiated at the rites at the Temple Tuesday with the Masons in charge at the cemetery. Pallbearers were John Fuchs, Folon Aydelotte, Elijah Aydelotte, Ivan McGuire, Oscar Million and Glenn Nash.
