Rondo Sperry Harmon, 79, of Provo, Utah, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, in Mesa, Arizona, of complications related to a stroke, following a short illness.

Rondo was a retired educator whose career included expanding the elementary and middle school systems of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Tongan Islands and throughout the South Pacific. He was also chairman of the Indian Education program and BYU before retiring in 1984. In 1997, he returned to Tonga to speak at the Bicentennial Celebration of Liahona High School where he served as principal from 1963 to 1968.

Rondo was born June 14, 1919, in Fairview, Wyoming, the first of 12 children of Walter Sperry and LaPrele Tolman Harmon. He graduated from Afton High School before serving an LDS Mission to California, Arizona, and Nevada. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was a staff sergeant and field artillery instructor at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Later, he earned bachelor 's and master's degrees from BYU. He married June Marie Riddles on January 18, 1945, in the Salt Lake Temple.

An active in the Church, he served in the Provo Ward bishopric, the high council of the Slate Canyon Stake and as Gospel Doctrine teacher and high priests group leader. He was a temple worker at the time of his death.

Rondo was an enthusiastic BYU sports fan, he loved to golf, work in his garden and was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather who spent extensive time with his children and grandchildren.

Rondo is survived by his wife, June, of Provo; seven brothers and three sisters: Wyoma Bruce (Charles), of Mesa, AZ; Sybil Haderlie (Paul), of Orem; Gaelyn (Nelda), of Orem; Dell, (Viva), of Midvale; Jay (Glynn); of Denver, CO; David (Joy), of Provo; Alan (Sylvia), of St. George, UT; Layle (Marie), of Mountain Home, WY; Roger (Maxine), of Green River, WY; Gloria Hardy (Paul), also of Green River, WY; six children: Lynda Jane Philbrick (Doug), of Mesa, AZ; Richard Dick (AnnaLee), of Orem, UT; Kent (Lisa), of Provo; Debra June DeMarco (Ken), of Pleasant Grove, UT; Phillip Rhae (Janet), of Orem; 31 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Alice; a brother, Duane; a son, Rondo Sperry Jr.; and grandson, Jeffery Jacob Harmon.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 8, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Slate Canyon Stake Center, 1315 East 900 South Provo. Friends may call Sunday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center Street, Provo and on Monday, at the church, one hour prior to services.
