Drafted and mustered in on 30 October 1863 at Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, into Co. M, 4th Michigan Cavalry; he joined his regiment on 28 February 1864; died due to disease (inflammation of the brain) on 9 August 1864 in General Hospital No. 1; originally interred in Athens, Limestone County, Alabama, before being disinterred and reinterred at Stones River National Cemetery. (The U.S., Registers of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861-1865 records his date of death was 26 August.)
