Gordon Lee Lease was born Dec. 18, 1949, in Vancouver, Wash., and died Aug. 23, 2006. He was 56 years old.

He lived in the Nehalem area most of his life. He was a member of the Nehalem Volunteer Fire Department and a driving force behind the Nehalem Bay Softball Association, almost single-handedly building and maintaining the baseball park. He also coached one of the girls' teams and played with teams sponsored by Coast Sanitary Service and later Big Blues Bud. You could find him every weekend working at the field cutting blackberry bushes, mowing the outfield or grooming the infield in preparation for the Sunday games.

He also was active in the Boy Scouts of America, both Boy Scout Troop 178 and Cub Scout Pack 178 as a leader, volunteer and parent. He helped condition a group of Boy Scouts in preparation for a 50-mile hike around the Three Sisters Mountains.

After being diagnosed with diabetes, he helped raise research funds through the American Diabetes Association's bike-a-thons. He also was an avid mountain bike rider and entered lots of mountain bike races.

He enjoyed fishing and camping and spent lots of time in the woods cutting wood, brining it home to split and stack. He had so many cords of wood stacked around the house that he was approached by people to sell some of the wood, which he did once in a while.

He began his welding career working with Phil Magwood in his shop in Nehalem. Later, he opened his own shop, Rainbow Welding in Wheeler, where he created items such as handrails, boat ramps, boat trailers, truck racks, regular trailers and a kiwi trellis. He also drove trucks, first for Stan Jud hauling cheese and produce, and for a short time for Matt Streeter. He drove log trucks for Snooks Clappe and then for JJ Neikes, out of Astoria. Eventually, he bought his own truck and trailer and Gorbec Transport was formed. He died doing what he loved, driving truck.

He married Judy Adelman Sept. 1, 1967, then married Janet Krenz on Dec. 18, 1981, and then married Rebecca Singharaj on Oct. 12, 2000.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harold, in 1963 and his mother, Dorothy, in 2001. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca of Nehalem; sons, Harold of Nevada and Graham, a U.S. Marine stationed Southern California; stepdaughters, Emily of Long Beach, Wash., and Niah of Nehalem; stepson, Sterling of Ilwaco; brother, Gene Reutter of Kalama, Wash., and his aunt and uncle, Frances and Dwain Miller of Ocean Park, Wash.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m., in the event room of Ron's Family Restaurant, 36480 U.S. 101 N. in Nehalem. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the American Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice.
