Rose (nee Vesel) Mattus, 90, of Cresskill, died on Tuesday, November 28, 2006. The company was formed in 1959, having morphed from her husband's family's decades-old business in the Bronx into a new company known for its rich desserts with high butterfat and little air. Reuben concocted the nonsensical name Haagen-Dazs, which means nothing in any language, for the brand that became famous for its super-rich recipes. By the time the Pillsbury Company acquired the brand in 1983, Haagen-Dazs then headquartered in Woodbridge, had retail outlets and was racking up global sales of more than $100m a year. From 1984 to 1995, the brand had its corporate offices in Teaneck before becoming a part of the Nestlé empire. She was a big fan of her product, particularly vanilla, despite having diabetes. During the company's early years, Rose would offer samples of the sweet concoctions in grocery stores. She spent a lifetime of devotion to many charitable causes, particularly those related to the security and development of the Jewish State of Israel. Amongst many awards, she was named outstanding entrepreneur by the National Association of Women Business Owners in 1995. Beloved wife of the late Reuben Mattus. Devoted mother of Doris (Kevin) Hurley of Boca Raton and Natalie (Evan) Salmore of Connecticut. Loving grandmother of 5 grandchildren. Cherished great-grandmother of 10 great-grandchildren. The funeral was officiated on Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 11:30 AM in the Gutterman-Musicant Funeral Directors, 402 Park Street, Hackensack, NJ 07601. Interment followed at Cedar Park Cemetery in Paramus. Rose was a breast cancer survivor and the family suggested donations to Gilda's Club Worldwide, the support organization for cancer patients and their families.
