Served in the Civil War with Co. D, 20th Indiana Infantry. He was wounded in the right knee on 2 July 1863 in the fight in Rose's Woods with the 3rd Arkansas Infantry. His leg was amputated. He lingered for over two months before succumbing to his wounds at Letterman Hospital in Gettysburg, PA. He was originally buried in that hospital's cemetery, Section 8, Grave #20. He was later reinterred in the National Cemetery. He was a resident of Fountain Co., IN.

He mustered in 22 July 1861 in Fountain County, IN, along with his brother Joseph Crabb. He served in Company D, 20th Indiana infantry until his wounding and subsequent death at Gettysburg.
