U.S. Senator. He graduated from Amherst College in 1925, from Harvard University Law School in 1928, was admitted to the bar, and proceeded to practice law in Cleveland, Ohio. Entering politics, he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives (1933 to 1934) and a member of the Shaker Heights Board of Education. During World War II, he served as a Major in the U.S. Army. After the war, he was a trustee of Baldwin-Wallace College and the Welfare Federation of Cleveland, Ohio. In 1946, he was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Harold H. Burton, and he served until 1947. Not a candidate for reelection, he practiced law and served as Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court from 1948 until his death.
