U.S. Senator. Born in Frederick County, Virginia, he moved with his parents to eastern Tennessee and then to Kentucky. Educated at Pisgah Academy, he studied medicine at Transylvania University and commenced to practice medicine in Cynthiana, in 1801. He was a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives 1803, then moved to Ohio, continued the practice of medicine and was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives, (1807-09). In 1809, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Edward Tiffin, serving until 1813. After his term, he continued the practice of medicine, was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives in 1819, was a member of the Ohio State Senate, (1822-24) and a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives, (1832-33). In 1835, he was vice president of the first general antislavery society of Ohio and was Mayor of Ripley, Ohio, (1838-40). He died at age 78 in Ripley, Ohio.
