Hans came to Brentwood in 1874, four years before the Southern Pacific Railroad arrived in Contra Costa County.

He was from Denmark and settled on a parcel of land on the corner of Sellers Ave. and Chestnut.Hans was a wheat farmer.

He was instrumental in establishing Liberty Union High School and was one of the first school board presidents.

Between Bonnickson pillar and Andrew Bonnickson are 2 small markers. One says just S.B.B & the other says H.B. I would take this to be Hans and Sadie Barkley Bonnickson.
