"BROOKS MET DEATH ACCIDENTLY"

"The body of B. B. Brooks, the Bayou La Batre, Ala., machinist who was drowned off Horn Island Dec. 23., was found by Bob Waters, keeper of the Longstreet Club on the Island, and was brought to Biloxi yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The son of the unfortunate man, P. P. Brooks, a machinist in the employ of the Gulfport and Ship Island Railroad at Gulfport, came to the city last night to make arrangements to have the body transported to Gulfport for interment this afternoon. It is at present at the parlors of the Bradford Undertaking Co. A. D. Gollott of this city, an intimate friend of the drowned man, was also communicated with at once. No additional light was shed upon the death of Mr. Brooks. He left Bayou La Batre on Tuesday to come to Biloxi where he was going to leave his boat with Mr. Gollott and then go on to Gulfort to spend Christmas with his son, P. P. Brooks. His watch had stopped at 6:18 and it is thought that he must have fallen overboard near Bellefountaine Point, from which locality his body drifted to Horn Island, where Waters found it in about (3 or 8) feet of water. The body was in a good state of preservation, but the face was badly mutilated. Mr. Brooks was 68 years old, an expert mechanic and former prominent lumberman, and bore the esteem and respect of all who knew him. He leaves a wife at Bayou Le Batre and a number of children living at different points in the South. L. A. Brooks, a son from Pensacola, will come to the coast to attend the funeral. A coroner's jury was empanelled yesterday by Judge I. B. Ellis and returned a verdict of death from accidental drowning. The jury was composed of Peter Bellande, R. M. Randolph, John Labash, John Tillman, F. A. Cane and Louis Staehling."
