U.S. Congressman. He attended Wake Forest University, studied law at the University of North Carolina, as admitted to the bar in 1894 and commenced practice in Clinton, North Carolina. He was a trustee of State Normal College for Women, (1895-1903) and a member of the North Carolina State Senate, (1895-96). In 1897, he was elected as a Populist to the Fifty-fifth Congress, serving until 1899. After his term, he again was a member of the North Carolina State House of Representatives, (1905-06) and engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death at age 63.
