Douglas James Adamson, age 70, of Plattekill, NY , was late on Sunday, August 14, 2011 , in his home and surrounded by family.

He was born on July 5, 1941 in Manhattan, NY, the son of Andrew and Julia (Mattson) Adamson. He married Karen Rae DeLello on August 7, 1966 in Middletown, NY.

From 1960 to 1964, he served in the US NAVY on the USS Randolph as a radar technician. He retired from Metro North Commuter Railroad, where he was the Director of Training and Development. He always maintained a love of trains well after retirement.

Douglas Adamson's generous nature touched many throughout the community. He was a supporter of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh as well as lending his time to the Plattekill Public Library. He loved to travel with his family and maintained an adventurous roaming spirit that took him around the world. His sense of adventure lives on in his family.

In addition to his wife Karen of over forty years, he is survived by his family: Heather Rae Adamson-Kennedy and her husband Spencer Kennedy of Bolton Landing, NY, Jennison Dhru Adamson and husband Gilmar Felix of Martha's Vineyard, MA, Erica Sage Adamson-Carroll and husband Jeffrey Carroll of Mahopac, NY, and Gwyn Dora Griffiths of Wallkill, NY. His two brothers and their wives: Phillip and Lois Adamson of Middletown, NY, and Robert and Kim Adamson of Cincinnati. His grandchildren, Alyas James and Thea Rae Kennedy, Julia Sage And Emilia Rae Felix. And his best four legged buddy, Skeeter.

Doug will always be remembered by family and friends as a gentle and quiet soul who would never hesitate to help anyone in need. Friends, neighbors and strangers alike have benefited from Doug's many skills which included carpentry, automobiles, as well as a general all around "handiness". His family relied on him heavily for his life experience and level headed decision making. Doug possessed a rare open mindedness. He was a member of the local Democratic Party and loved Bill O'Reilly. He was a member of both the Plattekill Rod and Gun Club and NRA, but could not bring himself to hunt. He was respected, admired and loved dearly by his surviving friends and family. Doug will be sorely missed.

Cremation took place at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. A gathering will take place over Columbus Day Weekend at his favorite "fishless fishing spot" in Cape May, NJ. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Douglas Adamson ALS Foundation, PO Box 1684, West Tisbury, MA 02575.
