The funeral service for Lornice V. Amos, 90, of Stewartville, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Stewartville, with Rev. Wane Souhrada officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Pleasant Grove.
Mrs. Amos died Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, of natural causes, at the Stewartville Care Center, where she had been a resident since 2008.
Lornice Violet Bernard was born March 27, 1921, in Pleasant Grove Township, to Ross and Meryl (Harrington) Bernard. She grew up on the family farm and attended rural schools and Stewartville schools. She graduated from Stewartville High School in 1940, and was employed at the Rochester State Hospital as a nurse's aide for a few years. Lornice was married on Sept. 20, 1944, in Rochester, to Gorham C. Amos.
Following their marriage the couple moved to the Amos family farm, where they farmed for many years, raised their children and where Mrs. Amos lived until 2008. She was a farm wife and homemaker and also was employed at Swygman's Nursing Home in Stewartville, and then at the Rochester Methodist Hospital until her retirement in 1988. Mr. Amos was a lifelong farmer and was employed as a custodian at Mayo Clinic for many years prior to his death on Dec. 10, 1982.
Mrs. Amos was a member of the United Methodist Church in Stewartville and belonged to both the Good Neighbors and Get Together Clubs in rural Stewartville. She was a past 4-H leader when her children were members and enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, canning, sewing, crocheting, knitting and crafts, especially ceramics, which she often did with her daughter-in-law, Tammy. She enjoyed visiting with friends and time spent with family, especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include her two daughters and son, Cheryl (George) McNeilus of Dodge Center, Pam (Don) Hall of New Prague and Scott (Tammy) of rural Stewartville; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Betcher of California. She was preceded in death by her parents; a twin sister, Lorraine; and brother, Fahy.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday morning.
