Wisconsin Governor. After working as a journeyman printer, he became part owner of newspapers the Watertown Republican and later worked at the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison, Wisconsin. During the Civil War, he served as Lieutenant in the 4th Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry, Union Army. After the war, he became editor of the La Crosse Democrat in 1871 and started his own newspaper the Peck's Sun, in Milwaukee, in 1874. Entering politics, he served as Ripon City Treasurer, in 1867, was chief of police of La Crosse, in 1873, chief clerk of the Wisconsin State Assembly, in 1875 and Mayor of Milwaukee, in 1890. In 1891, he was elected as a Democratic the17th Wisconsin Governor, serving until 1895. After leaving office, he resumed his newspaper interests and published his successful book series, "Peck's Bad Boy," which was featured in a number of comic books, stage theatres and later went on to appear in three movies.
