Wisconsin Governor. Moving to the United States in 1835, he began working for the New York mercantile firm of Lord & Taylor and later took charge of the mercantile firm in Fox Lake, Wisconsin. There he became active in politics, serving as a member of the Wisconsin State Senate (1864 to 1866), the 5th Wisconsin State Treasurer (1866 to 1870), and a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly (1871 to 1872). In 1878, he was elected as a Republican, the 14th Wisconsin Governor, serving until 1882. After leaving office, he returned to Milwaukee and ran a successful wholesale grocery business until his death.
