SAUK CITY/STOUGHTON — Joseph J. Maerz, age 78, died suddenly, on Wednesday, October 21, 1987, at Stoughton Hospital.

He was born in Martinsville on April 4, 1909, the son of the late Peter and Barbara (Endres) Maerz.

He was married to the former Mary Werla on July 2, 1935.

Mr. Maerz was employed by Oscar Mayer And Company for 33 years and also farmed near Cottage Grove. He was a Sauk City resident since 1976. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, a former member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Stoughton, and a member of Meat Cutters Union Local #538.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; seven sons; six daughters; a daughter-in-law; two brothers, William of Prairie du Sac, and Albert of DeForest; three sisters, Katherine Kirch of Sauk City, Eleanore Ganser of Lodi, and Susan Maier of Waunakee; 49 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Wayne, in 1981; a brother, Peter; and three sisters, Mary Schmitke, Rose Johanning, and Annie Hatch.

Funeral services will be held at GNEWIKOW FUNERAL HOME, in Sauk City, and at ST. ALOYSIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, on Saturday, October 24, 1987, with Father William Seipp officiating. Burial will be in St. Norbert's Cemetery, in Roxbury.
