U.S. Senator. He immigrated with his parents to the United States in 1791, received a formal education, and taught school in Butler County, Pennsylvania. Entering politics, was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives (1811-12) and a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate (1813-19). In 1819, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1825. Not a candidate for reelection remained as Secretary of the United States Senate, (1825-36). He also was secretary of the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions until his death in New York City.
