Mr. Wicker began covering American politics when he joined The New York Times's Washington Bureau in 1960, becoming Bureau Chief four years later. He began writing the Times' "In the Nation" column in October 1966 which he continued until his retirement in 1991. He authored several books about U.S. presidents including "One of Us: Richard Nixon and the American Dream" (1991), "JFK & LBJ" (1966) and "Kennedy Without Tears" (1964). As an American journalist, he covered the assasination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina. His journalism awards include a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard during the academic year 1957-58. He returned to Harvard in 1993 where he was a fellow at the Joan Shorenstein Barone Center of the Kennedy School of Government. His latest book is Tragic Failure: Racial Integration in America, published in May 1996. Mr. Wicker has been married since 1974 to Pamela Hill, a television producer and a vice president of the Cable News Network (CNN). He had lived in New York and Vermont.
