Prominent Resident Nearly
Half Century Succumbs
at Home Saturday

ILL FOR TWO WEEKS

The funeral of Lyman M. Finney,
one of the city's most distinguished
residents for nearly 50 years, who
died Saturday at 8:20 a. m. at his
home, 48 Williams street, after a
two-weeks illness, will be held tomorrow
at 2 p. m. at the Church
of the Ascension.
The Rev. Henry S. Sizer, jr., rector,
will officiate. Members of
Trinity Commendery, No. 58,
Knights Templar, will attend in a
body and will conduct services in
the church and at the grave in Oak
Hill cemetery.
Death was attributed to a complication
of ailments. Mr. Finney
had been confined to his home
since February. 18.
"Survivors include his widow,
Mrs. Famie Finney; a son, Charles,
of Brooklyn, N. Y, a granddaughter,
Mary E., of Brooklyn; a grandson,
Maynard P., of this city, and
two brothers, Claude L., of Syracuse,
N. Y., and Edward, of Detroit,
Mich.
Local Resident Since 1893
A resident of this city since 1893,
Mr. Finney was one of its most
outstanding citizens. He had been
the representative of the National
Life Insurance company of Vermont
here since 1904 and was regarded
as a business man of the
highest character.
He became sole executor of the
John Ley estate on the death of
Harry M. Wick several years ago.
Conscientious to the point of scrupulousness,
he treated every obligation
incurred in business or social
life as a sacred matter. He held
the respect of all who knew him.
Mr. Finney was one of the most
prominent Masons in Pennsylvania,
having been a member and presiding
officer in virtually every
classification of the order.
Held Municipal Position
He was a member of the Church
of the Ascension and had been a
member of the vestrj' of the church.
Liberal in his attitude, he took an
interest in the welfare of other religious
creeds and aided them to
prosper.
Fraternal organizations with
which, Mr. Finney was affiliatedincluded the Knights of Pythias
the Elks and the Odd Fellows. He
was a director of the McKean Motor
club and had been its treasurer
since inception of the organization
until his resignation this year.
Mr. Finney had been a member
of the city government, having
served as city comptroller and later
as city commissioner some
years ago.
Held Many Masonic Offices
Mr. Finney's interest in Masonic
institutions and activities formed
a highlight of his life and the list
of offices he held forms a testimony
to the esteem in which he
was held. They included:

334, Free and Accepted Masons of
Bradford; past high priest of
Bradford chapter, No. 260, Royal
Arch Masons; pwt thrice Illustrious
master, Bradford Council, No. 43,
Royal and Select Masons; past eminent
commander, Trinity Commandery,
No. 58, Knights Templar; prelate
of the comaadery for more
than 20 years; past district deputy
grand master of Grand Lodge of
Pennsylvania.
Past district deputy grand high
priest of Grand Chapter of Royal
Arch Masons of Pennsylvania; past
district deputy grand master of the
Grand Council, Royal and Select
Masters; past division commander
of the Grand Commandery of
Knights Templar of Pennsylvania;
past most puissant grand master
of the Grand Council, Royal and
Select Master of Pennsylvania;
representative of Grand Masonic
end Templar bodies in various
grand jurisdictions in the United
States.
Was Married in 1880
Mr. Finney had been treasurer of
Bradford council, Royal and Select
Masons, for 30 years at the time
of his death. Other offices he held
at the time of his passing included
trustee of Bradford chapter, Royal
Arch Masons, and treasurer of
Trinity Commandery of the Knights
Templar.
He was an authority on Masonic
law, history and ritual. He held
membership also in the Coudersport
Consistory, Ismalia Temple,
and Shrine of Buffalo.
Born in Forkston, Wyoming
county. Pa., he was the son of
Capt. Charles L. Finney and Sophia
Park. Mr. Finney traced his
ancestry to Gov. William Bradford
of Plymouth colony.
He came to Bradford for the
first time in 1880, the year of his
marriage to Miss Famie E. English.
Before locating here permanently
he engaged in business in Towanda,
Pa., in New York city and in
the state of Virginia.
