Obituary on funeral home web site: Jacob Carroll Arant, 91, of 964 Highway 39, Chappells, died Thursday, October 13, 2011. Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Shedrick Summers and Allye Bullock Arant. Jake was a graduate of both Newberry College and Wofford College and was a US Navy veteran, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He taught for two years at Silverstreet High School, where he was principal and coach for the boy's and girl's basketball teams. He retired as the vice president of Saluda Shirt Company after more than 30 years of service, where he found his "second home" among many loyal friends and company employees. Jake was the oldest and longest surviving member of Soule Chapel United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities. Surviving are his son, Jacob C. Arant, Jr. and his wife, Martha Anne, of Chappells; two grandchildren, Andrea Parsons and her husband, Shannon, of Chappells and Jon-Michael Davis and his wife, Summer, of Richmond, KY; five great grandchildren, Benjamin Jacob Parsons, Mason Davis Parsons, Samuel Andrew Parsons, Briley Bennett Davis and Paxton Raine Davis and a sister, Grace Utsey of Abbeville. He was also blessed with many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jake was preceded in death by his first wife, Mattie Timmerman Arant in 1975 and his second wife, Elizabeth Workman Arant in July, 2011 and sisters, Lucy Arant Webb, Vivian Arant Montgomery and Catherine Arant. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the care provided by Rachael Etheridge through Angel Care of Newberry and the staff of Hospice House, Greenwood.
