DAVENPORT — John R. Blunk, 92, a resident of Davenport, died on Thursday, March 26, 2009, at Fejervary Health Care Center, Davenport.
Burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. The American Legion Post 26 will conduct graveside military rites.
John Richard Blunk was born August 25, 1916, in Davenport, a son of William J. and Mary Stella (Kerrigan) Blunk.
He graduated from the former St. Ambrose Academy and St. Ambrose College.
John was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Medical Department.
He retired in 1989 from the family construction business, Blunk Brother's Construction,which was established by his father, William J. Blunk. He had been a partner and general contractor along with his brother, William J. Blunk, Jr.
He was a lifetime member of Holy Family Church, his family being charter members of the parish and a member of the Carpenters Union Local, the American Legion Post 26, and the AMVETS. John was a volunteer Polling Election Official for over 20 years.
John enjoyed his garage on W. 15th Street, as well as driving his red work truck around town. He had a sweet tooth and craved Hy-Vee oatmeal raisin cookies and hard candies. He especially cherished visits from family and friends, including two very good friends, Loran Ouderkirk and Joe Schloemer. He always enjoyed reminiscing and story telling with these and other friends.
His hobbies were similar to his business. He enjoyed remodeling and construction. He was interested in new materials and changes in material in the construction trade, as well as recycling of old materials.
Memorials may be made to Holy Family Parish.
Survivors include a sister, Sr. Mary Clare Blunk, RSM, Aurora, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Blunk, Davenport; as well as nieces and nephews and a grand niece and grand nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, William J. and Francis James Blunk. May they rest in peace.
