"Joseph Broaddus, for 58 years a resident of Chillicothe, died suddenly at his home, 202 Walnut Street on Monday night at 10:15 o'clock of heart trouble. The body was removed to the Gordon Funeral Home where it was prepared for burial.
Joseph Broaddus was born in Madison County, Kentucky on May 28, 1862. He was a son of Elbridge J. Broaddus and Anna Chambers Broaddus. He came to Chillicothe with his parents when he was five years of age and had since that time made this city his home. His father was judge of the circuit court of this district for years and the family was very prominent in social and church work.
On December 22, 1887, he was married to Miss Jessie Ware in Fulton, Illinois. His widow and the following children survive: James Ware Broaddus of Kansas City; Richard Dudley Broaddus of Chillicothe; Wayne Reed Broaddus, who is employed by the government geological survey in Ireton; and Miss Mary Louise Broaddus of the home address. Another son, Jerry, died at Camp Dodge, Iowa in October 1918.
He is survived by the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Jack Newland of Frederick, Oklahoma; Mrs. J.S. Mize of Waureka, Oklahoma; Mrs, Mac Fitchen of Oklahoma City; Mrs. Robert Simmons of Sweet Water, Texas; Miss Mattie Broaddus of Kansas City; Frank Broaddus of Kansas City; Elbridge Broaddus of Wagoner, Oklahoma; and Bower Broaddus of Muskogee, Oklahoma.
Mr. Broaddus took a very active part in politics in the city and county. For years, he was a member of the city and county Democratic central committees and one of the most loyal workers in the party. He was appointed city engineer in 1906 and served continuously in that capacity until May of this year. For over 30 years, he was county surveyor and engineer, having been elected to that position for 8 or 9 terms. In 1900, he was named superintendent of the government census bureau for this, the second congretional district.
There probably never was a man in Chillicothe who had the wide acquaintance and large number of friends Joe Broaddus had. He was a great lover of outdoor sport, hunting and fishing being his favorite pasttimes." The Chillicothe Constitution, June 23, 1925
