U.S. Congressman, Physician. Born in Pennsylvania, he moved to Columbiana County, Ohio with his family when he was a child. Fries was educated in the common schools and later studied medicine. He became a physician and practiced in Hanoverton, Ohio. Elected as a Democrat to represent Ohio's 17th District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1845 to 1849. While a Congressman, he was at the side of John Quincy Adams when the former President collapsed from heart failure on the House floor in 1848. Fries was reelected in 1846 and declined to become a candidate for renomination in 1848. He moved to Cincinnati in 1850 and resumed his profession as a doctor. He worked with the area's prominent physicians and was a surgeon at St. John's Hospital for several years. Fries was later elected as the Hamilton County Treasurer and served from 1860 to 1862. In 1864, he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Opposed to matters concerning warfare, he was a Union man during the Civil War despite his affiliation to the Democratic Party. When news reached Cincinnati of President Lincoln's assassination in 1865, his residence was mobbed and gutted because of his political ties. He died in Cincinnati in 1866 when he was 67 years old. He was initially buried in Section 65 at Spring Grove Cemetery and was later removed to Section 14 in 1874.
