North Dakota Governor, U.S. Senator. Immigrating to the United States in 1905, he worked for the Great Northern Railway (1906 to 1911). He was secretary of the North Dakota State Teachers College (1911 to 1913), graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1914, graduated from the University of North Dakota Law School in 1915, was admitted to the bar, and practiced law in Hope and Hebron, North Dakota. Entering politics, he served as Attorney of Mercer County, North Dakota (1919 to 1923, 1927 to 1933). In 1938, he was elected as a Democrat, the 22nd North Dakota Governor, serving until 1945. He served as Grand Master of Masons in North Dakota in 1941. During his governorship, state spending was controlled and the state's agricultural crops flourished. After leaving office, he was elected as a Democrat to U.S. Senate in 1945 and served until his death.
